Become An Activist
septiembre 03 2024 – Justin Mickens
Here at TYT, we love activists. We love them so much that we have an entire collection of products dedicated to those willing to stand on the front lines and fight for change. If that describes you, thank you for your hard work and dedication. Your actions are vital to the health and well-being of our democracy. As for the rest of you, if you want to become an activist, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we want to pass on some information and resources that you may find useful as you begin your journey to be a part of the solution.
First things first, becoming an activist starts on the inside. Maybe you started by liking, commenting, and sharing socially minded content online. But somewhere along the way, you’ve found the motivation to get even more involved in the issues that matter. We applaud you for reaching this important first step. But now that you’re ready to do something, what exactly should you do?
Something you can do today is start a petition. We believe in the power of petitions. In fact we have one on our site right now that you can sign to show your support for paid family leave. Change.org offers simple tools that you can use to start a petition for just about anything. But before you run off to start that petition, here are a few things to consider. First, what issue should this petition address, and how? Then identify the types of people willing to sign the petition. Finally, you should know who this petition should be delivered to for the issue to be addressed. Once you know all three of these key factors, you can begin. We suggest that you begin with something local. That way instead of fighting social media’s biased algorithms, you can simply venture out into your community and get signatures directly from the people.
Let’s say your feelings are especially fired up and you want to get out into the streets and take direct action. We love this for you. For most people, when they think about direct action, they envision crowds marching through the street with big signs and clever chants. But that is only one way to show your public support for change. According to Amnesty International, there are about 50 ways to take direct action. Lucky for you, they have a complete list for your viewing pleasure. With so many options to choose from, you can organize direct action in a way that aligns with you and your target audience creatively.
Now all of this is just a start. Anything else you need to know that can further enable you to become an effective activist can be gained through experience. The road ahead of you is difficult. The establishment and its corporate masters will resist progress at any cost. But do not get discouraged. You’re here now so our movement to fight for positive change is stronger than it was yesterday. Together we can make a difference.
This election season, wear your support for the issues that matter to you most. Visit our Activist Collection here on ShopTYT. We have something for everyone including you and all the other activists in your life.
