The State of Weed in America
April 19 2024 – Justin Mickens
Let’s take moment to talk about the current state of weed in America. We’ve seen substantial progress on the issue of marijuana legalization in the last decade. 38 states have legalized it for medicinal purposes, and 24 states have legalized it for recreational use. Unfortunately, legalization on the federal level is still a distant dream.
Polling shows that 80% of adults support legalizing marijuana for medicinal use. With such overwhelming support among the electorate, it should be a no-brainer for Congress to legalize weed. At the very least, it should be rescheduled so that it doesn’t share the same classification as meth and heroin. But despite the many campaign promises, this issue has been sidelined.
History shows us that the government won’t act unless we act. It’s time to put an end to this portion of the Drug War. No one should be in prison, nor should they have a criminal record for partaking in the same activities as the President.
Whether you’re a patron of the green or an ally of justice, we need to work together to push this issue forward. Introduced in 2023, the More Act will remove marijuana from the list of scheduled substances under the Controlled Substances Act. It also eliminates criminal penalties for an individual who manufactures, distributes, or possesses marijuana. The MORE act is stuck in committee. So it’s time for us to turn up the pressure on our elected officials.
