The 90th Academy Awards will be held this Sunday, March 4th, and will be hosted by late night TV show host Jimmy Kimmel.
In every great movie, there is always a storyline that can be resonated with, or one that touches on political tones from the past and present. The nominations for the awards do exactly that. 'Get Out', written and directed by Jordan Peele, takes the lead for this year's top movies. I have never seen a movie brilliantly act as both a comedy and a thriller while using dark satire to portray the societal horrors of racial aggression.
Movies use political meaning to tell a story. In a way, filmmaking is a lot like journalism. With or without the use of fiction, filmmakers use movies to bring truth to power. While journalists create the first draft of history, filmmakers take this draft and turn it into entertainment with the goal of making a statement or impact.
Political statements have stolen the show for this year's awards season. We've seen the #TimesUp movement become heavily broadcasted by Hollywood, and it's great that the issue of misrepresentation is finally being addressed. However, it cannot be only for show. Those who have taken a stance against the systematic sexism and racism in Hollywood will now be expected to take action.
