Build the Walz
October 24 2024 – Justin Mickens
Many were surprised and excited when Vice-President Kamala Harris named Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Walz stands out among his peers. As a Governor, he played a key role in bringing many progressive policies to the people of Minnesota. Today, residents of the Gopher State enjoy on average a $1,244 tax credit per child, free tuition at public colleges and universities, abortion protections, universal school meals, gender-affirming care, paid family and medical leave, investments in affordable housing, clean energy initiatives, voting rights for ex-felons, and period products for school bathrooms. That is quite a list.
There are probably a few policies among those in Minnesota that Americans would love to see implemented nationwide. On the issue of childcare alone, 71% of voters want to see an expansion of the child tax credit. Walz’s rise to the seat of Vice President could create an opportunity to see some of Minnesota’s progressive policies re-enter the national conversation. Can you imagine it? A future where the rest of the United States enjoys the same privileges as Minnesota.
However even if Harris and Walz triumph over Trump and Vance in November, the forces of stagnation still hold sway over our nation’s priorities. Currently, the United States spends hundreds of billions of dollars on corporate welfare and our bloated military budget. Obviously, some of this money actually goes to protecting this nation from various threats. But a lot of it ends up lining the pockets of defense contractors and funding unsavory endeavors overseas. If we are to ever see a day where our government prioritizes the needs of its citizens, we are going to need strong allies in key positions.
Walz could be this ally. So we want to build him up for the sake of achieving lasting progress. To show our support for him we have collaborated with TYT member Micheil Knapp to create a new design. Our Build the Walz shirt showcases our aspirations to see the policies Americans need become a bulwark against the true threats to our democracy. Childhood poverty is a threat to our democracy. The growing epidemic of homelessness is a threat to our democracy. People being deprived of their rights over their own bodies and their right to vote is a threat to our democracy.
Let’s Build the Walz and bring a little piece of Minnesota to other forty-nine states.
