No to Religious Zealotry, Yes to Women's Right to Choose

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Across the nation, millions of women lost critical access to healthcare and medical treatments that had been available since the 1970s. While the rest of us mourned this catastrophic failure in the justice system, the religious right celebrated. Their decades-long crusade against a woman's right to choose had succeeded. With the aid of so-called “Trigger Laws,” abortion became instantly illegal in thirteen states. Emboldened by the Supreme Court’s decision, others would soon follow with legal restrictions of their own. It was a dark day in U.S. history. For all the right reasons, Ana Kasparian would not take the Supreme Court’s unjust decision lightly.

The ruling of these activist judges would have dire consequences. Ana unleashed a verbal onslaught of condemnation toward those who would use religion to suppress the rights of others. “I don’t care what the Bible says–you do not get to dictate the way that I get to live my life based on your religion,” she proclaimed. Her passionate and spontaneous monologue spread across the internet, resulting in a viral video we recognize today as the “Ana Commandment.”

The Ana Commandment is not limited to the struggle to restore abortion protections in America. It is a battle cry for people everywhere to rise against those who would reshape the world in the image of their draconian religious beliefs. Everyone deserves to have freedom of religion as well as freedom FROM religion. The commandment is for the defense of human rights over religious dogma.

Today, pro-choice advocates continue to rage against right-wing tyranny from the judicial branch. This month, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a near-total abortion ban, with exceptions only to save the mother's life. Petitioners are in the streets now. If they can get enough signatures, Arizona voters will be able to vote on a ballot measure that could protect abortion rights for the first twenty-four weeks of pregnancy. But this is only one battleground of thousands across the country. Widespread political participation is vital to achieving victory.

If you’re ready to stand up for women’s reproductive rights, Shop TYT has everything you need. We have enshrined the words of  Ana’s Commandment on T-shirts, tank tops, and hoodies. Show the religious zealots on the right exactly how you feel. This election season, make a statement and wear the Ana Commandment for all your advocacy!
